broken chains

brokenIt is insane how much Satan has been trying to demolish those around me lately. I look around at the events occurring and I begin to feel hopeless. Relationships are at stake, families are at stake, LIVES are at stake. Satan is bound and determined to steal, kill and destroy. We hear this all of the time in church, but we don’t take the time to think about the ways he does this until they are already happening and then we feel it is too late. He loves to put people in bondage. The chains he binds people in can take many forms such as sin, addiction, doubt, hurts from others, sicknesses, hopelessness etc.

I must admit that tonight while trying to help a friend who is bound in chains they did not choose, I began to lose my faith. As they were leaving, I spoke the words, “I’ll be praying for you” and “only God can turn this around… lean on Him”, but I felt absolutely devastated. Then (for the first time in many many years) I fell to my knees  and I just cried out to God. I prayed that the Holy Spirit would be present in this situation TONIGHT and that He would break down the chains that are enslaving this family. Immediately I felt the Holy Spirit and the lyrics to “Break Every Chain” came to mind. After pouring out my heart to God, I opened my Bible and read Psalm 107. Please read this with me and insert whatever bondage you are going through yourself or whatever bondage you are witnessing in those around you.

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    whom he has redeemed from trouble
and gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.

Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to a city to dwell in;
hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way
    till they reached a city to dwell in.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
9 For he satisfies the longing soul,
    and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    prisoners in affliction and in irons,
11 for they had rebelled against the words of God,
    and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12 So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
    they fell down, with none to help.
13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
    and burst their bonds apart.
15 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
16 For he shatters the doors of bronze
    and cuts in two the bars of iron.

17 Some were fools through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
18 they loathed any kind of food,
    and they drew near to the gates of death.
19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
20 He sent out his word and healed them,
    and delivered them from their destruction.
21 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22 And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

23 Some went down to the sea in ships,
    doing business on the great waters;
24 they saw the deeds of the Lord,
    his wondrous works in the deep.
25 For he commanded and raised the stormy wind,
    which lifted up the waves of the sea.
26 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
    their courage melted away in their evil plight;
27 they reeled and staggered like drunken men
    and were at their wits’ end.[b]
28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
29 He made the storm be still,
    and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad that the waters[c] were quiet,
    and he brought them to their desired haven.
31 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
32 Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,
    and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

33 He turns rivers into a desert,
    springs of water into thirsty ground,
34 a fruitful land into a salty waste,
    because of the evil of its inhabitants.
35 He turns a desert into pools of water,
    a parched land into springs of water.
36 And there he lets the hungry dwell,
    and they establish a city to live in;
37 they sow fields and plant vineyards
    and get a fruitful yield.
38 By his blessing they multiply greatly,
    and he does not let their livestock diminish.

39 When they are diminished and brought low
    through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40 he pours contempt on princes
    and makes them wander in trackless wastes;
41 but he raises up the needy out of affliction
    and makes their families like flocks.
42 The upright see it and are glad,
    and all wickedness shuts its mouth.

43 Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
    let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Read that over and over and over again (because I’m sure gonna)! I couldn’t just pick certain verses of that psalm because every word… WOW!!!! Just like the song says, “There is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain”.

We have the tendency to not trust God for the really big stuff in our lives. It is easy to believe Him in the day-to-day smaller problems that come our way, but when the really heavy stuff hits we think that people can’t overcome addictions, broken families cannot be restored, and people will never find their way back to Christ. BUT when it looks as though all hope is lost, THAT is when God shows up in all of His glory to rescue and redeem. Read verses 10-14 in the passage above again. God delivered the prisoners from their bondage, but it happened when they were in the absolute darkness, “the shadow of death”. In other words, in the worst situations when all hope seemed to be lost… when there wasn’t an easy outcome… when no one else could help, God Almighty ripped apart their heavy chains and set them free. HALLELUJAH!

I’m sorry this post is so scatter-brained and probably full of grammatical errors. It’s 1 A.M. and I just had to share where I am at in this very moment. God is about to move mountains! Despite the heartache I feel for certain loved ones in some overwhelming situations, I can’t wait to see the outcome when God “bursts their bonds apart”.

I leave you with my favorite version of the song:

xoxo, C
